Dutch Proverbs & Sayings

Dutch proverbs (spreekwoorden) offer a window into Dutch culture. Many date back centuries and reflect values like practicality, thrift, and directness.

Water-related proverbs reflect the Dutch relationship with water: Stille wateren hebben diepe gronden (Still waters have deep grounds — quiet people have hidden depths). Na regen komt zonneschijn (After rain comes sunshine) is universally known.

Trade and money proverbs reflect merchant culture: Wie het kleine niet eert, is het grote niet weerd (Who doesn't honor the small, doesn't deserve the big). Geld maakt niet gelukkig, maar het is wel een mooie troost (Money doesn't make you happy, but it's nice consolation).

Animal proverbs are rich and vivid: Als de kat van huis is, dansen de muizen (When the cat's away, the mice will dance). Beter een vogel in de hand dan tien in de lucht (Better a bird in hand than ten in the air).

Uniquely Dutch sayings have no direct equivalents: Doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg (Just act normal, that's crazy enough) captures the Dutch aversion to showing off. Hoge bomen vangen veel wind (Tall trees catch much wind) warns against standing out.

Biblical origins are common: Wie een kuil graaft voor een ander, valt er zelf in (Who digs a pit for another, falls in themselves). Many speakers use these without knowing their biblical source.
