From Old Dutch to Modern

Dutch evolved through distinct phases, each leaving traces in modern language. Understanding this history explains many irregularities and enriches vocabulary comprehension.

Old Dutch (Oudnederlands, before 1150) survives mainly in fragments. The oldest known Dutch sentence is from around 1100: Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hi anda thu (All birds have begun nests, except me and you). The language had extensive case endings and a very different sound system.

Middle Dutch (Middelnederlands, 1150-1500) was the language of medieval literature and trade. Jacob van Maerlant wrote encyclopedic works. Many words from this period survive: ambacht (craft), gilde (guild), koopman (merchant). The case system was already simplifying.

The Statenvertaling (States Bible, 1637) was crucial for standardization, much like the King James Bible for English. Many biblical phrases entered everyday Dutch: de inwendige mens (the inner person), een doorn in het oog (a thorn in the eye).

Spelling reforms have shaped modern Dutch. The 1947 and 1995/2005 reforms standardized many inconsistencies. Dutch now follows phonetic principles more closely than English but retains historical spellings in some words.

The Golden Age (17th century) brought massive vocabulary expansion through trade. Words from Malay (amok, bamboe), Japanese (soja), and many other languages entered Dutch through the VOC (Dutch East India Company).
