The NVC Framework in Dutch
Non-violent communication (NVC) follows four steps in Dutch: observation, feeling, need, request. This requires combining several advanced grammatical structures.
Step 1 — Observation (Als ik... dan...):
- Als ik zie dat je laat thuiskomt... — When I see that you come home late...
Step 2 — Feeling (dan voel ik...):
- ...dan voel ik me bezorgd. — ...then I feel worried.
Step 3 — Need (omdat ik... nodig heb):
- ...omdat ik veiligheid nodig heb. — ...because I need safety.
Complete NVC sentence: Als ik zie dat je laat thuiskomt, dan voel ik me bezorgd, omdat ik veiligheid nodig heb. Zou je me kunnen laten weten wanneer je later bent?
The structure zou je... kunnen creates a polite request:
- Zou je me willen vertellen hoe je je voelt? — Would you tell me how you feel?
Iets nodig hebben (to need something) uses the split construction:
- Ik heb erkenning nodig. — I need acknowledgment.
These patterns transform confrontational communication into empathetic dialogue.

常见错误
Ik heb nodig erkenning.Ik heb erkenning nodig.In nodig hebben, nodig is a separable part that goes to the end of the clause.
Ik voel bezorgd.Ik voel me bezorgd.Zich voelen is reflexive — you must include the reflexive pronoun me.
Zou je kunnen naar me luisteren?Zou je naar me willen luisteren?With zou...willen, the infinitive luisteren goes to the end; naar me precedes it.
Omdat ik heb veiligheid nodig.Omdat ik veiligheid nodig heb.In subordinate clauses with omdat, the conjugated verb heb moves to the end.
Wat nodig heb jij?Wat heb jij nodig?In questions with wat, heb follows the question word and jij; nodig goes to the end.
