Linguistic Humour in Chinese
Chinese humour is deeply rooted in the phonological richness of the language. The tonal system and the density of homophones make Chinese an extraordinarily fertile ground for wordplay.
The 歇后语 (Xiehouyu)
The xiehouyu is a uniquely Chinese humour device: a two-part saying where the first part sets up an image and the second delivers the punch line — often left unsaid.
- 外甥打灯笼 — 照旧 (zhào jiù = as usual, but also 照 his 舅 uncle)
- 老虎拉车 — 没人敢赶 (nobody dares drive it — meaning nobody dares object)
The listener must infer the second part. Understanding them marks cultural fluency.
Homophonic Puns (谐音)
Chinese internet humour exploits homophones constantly:
- 河蟹 (river crab) sounds like 和谐 (harmony) → used to refer to censorship
- 菊花 (chrysanthemum) — co-opted for vulgar double meaning
- 草泥马 (alpaca) → famous euphemism for an insult
Irony (反讽)
Chinese irony is often underplayed. Excessive expression kills the effect:
- "您真是太厉害了。" said flatly after a blunder = cutting sarcasm
- "辛苦了" said with a sigh to someone who caused trouble = pointed understatement
Comedy of Understatement
Saying less than you mean (委婉) is a core Chinese cultural value that doubles as comedy:
- 有那么一点点问题 (there's a tiny little problem) = serious crisis
- 差不多 (almost) = completely wrong but politely stated
Classic xiehouyu: as usual (pun on uncle)
Suffering in silence / can't complain
Speak of the devil (and he appears)
Ironic praise for obvious failure
How convenient / that's quite the coincidence
Good enough / that'll do (often ironic)
You've worked hard (ironic when misused)
Honestly / fr fr (casual intensifier)

The point of xiehouyu is that the second part is often left unsaid — this is the defining feature.
逗人发笑 is the specific, idiomatic expression for making people laugh with humour.
