Literary Appreciation & Analysis in Chinese

Chinese literary criticism has its own rich tradition dating back to the Six Dynasties. At C2 level, you should be able to analyse works using both Chinese-specific terms and universal literary concepts.

The Concept of 意境

意境 (yìjìng) has no direct English equivalent. It is the total aesthetic atmosphere created by the fusion of image (意象) and feeling — not just what is described but the emotional "realm" the reader enters.

In Wang Wei's poetry, 意境 is achieved through minimalism: a single image — an empty mountain, a falling leaf — evokes vast emotional space.

Narrative Perspective (叙述视角)

Chinese fiction uses perspective with great sophistication:

• 第一人称 (first person): creates intimacy and unreliability
• 第三人称全知 (third-person omniscient): traditional; narrator knows all
• 自由间接引语 (free indirect discourse): blends narrator and character voice

Key Techniques

• 白描 (bái miáo): precise, unornamented description — no adjectives, pure action
• 烘托 (hōng tuō): surrounding/foil technique — describe the environment to reveal inner state
• 伏笔 (fú bǐ): foreshadowing planted early for later payoff

In Chinese literary analysis, quoting the original text is essential. Paraphrase alone is considered insufficient — the ability to work directly with the Chinese is the mark of a true reader.
