Improvising in Chinese

Improvised speaking in Chinese requires strategic use of filler phrases, thinking aloud, and graceful stalling.

Intelligent fillers (缓冲语)

These buy you time while keeping the conversation flowing:

• 这是个很有意思的问题，让我想想... (That's a very interesting question, let me think...)
• 您说得很有道理，不过从另一个角度看... (You make a valid point, but from another angle...)
• 容我稍作整理，再来回应... (Let me briefly organise my thoughts before responding...)

Bridging technique

When you're not sure, bridge to what you do know:

• 这个具体数据我手头没有，但从整体趋势来看... (I don't have that specific data, but looking at the overall trend...)
• 关于这一点，我想先从宏观层面来分析... (On this point, I'd like to first analyse at the macro level...)

The "repeat and rephrase" technique

• Repeat the question in your own words to confirm and gain time:
• "您问的是关于X的影响，对吗？那我先..."
• "If I understand correctly, you're asking about X. Let me..."

Useful improvisation patterns

• 先...再... — First..., then... (lets you sequence your thinking)
• 一方面...另一方面... — On one hand..., on the other... (shows balanced thinking)
• 不妨这样理解：... — One might understand it this way: (reframing)
