Exploring Grand Propositions in Chinese
At C1, you engage with abstract, macro-level ideas in Chinese: ethics, society, human nature, progress.
Structuring a philosophical argument:
1. State the proposition (命题) — 有人认为……，也有人主张…… (Some hold that..., others argue...) 2. Present premises (前提) — 要讨论这一命题，首先需要厘清几个前提 (To discuss this, we must first clarify premises) 3. Build inference (推论) — 若这一前提成立，则可推论出…… (If this premise holds, we can infer...) 4. Acknowledge paradox (悖论) — 然而，这里存在一个悖论 (However, there is a paradox here) 5. Dialectical resolution (辩证) — 辩证地看，两者并非截然对立 (Dialectically, the two are not entirely opposed)
Key Chinese philosophical vocabulary:
- 人性善恶 — the goodness or evil of human nature
- 天下兴亡，匹夫有责 — every citizen bears responsibility for the fate of the nation (Gu Yanwu)
- 知行合一 — unity of knowledge and action (Wang Yangming)
Important: At C1 you are expected to engage critically, not just summarise. Use 我认为 / 我主张 / 值得商榷 (debatable) to show independent thought.
表达

- 若这一前提成立，则可推论出……If this premise holds, we can infer that...
- 辩证地看，两者并非截然对立Dialectically, the two are not entirely opposed

常见错误
我认为人性是善的，因为人都很好。我倾向于认为人性本善，但这一命题需要在特定的历史与社会条件下加以审视。At C1, philosophical arguments need nuance and qualifications — bare assertions without conditions or evidence are too thin
