Decoding Political Discourse in Chinese
Chinese political language uses specific rhetorical devices and vocabulary patterns. Recognising them is key to critical reading.
Key rhetorical devices in Chinese political speech
- 排比 (anaphora/parallelism): Builds momentum through repetition
- 我们要...，我们要...，我们要... (triple parallel)
- 三段式 (tricolon): Three-part structure for emphasis
- 改革、创新、发展 (reform, innovation, development)
- 情感诉求 (emotional appeal): Invoking patriotism, collective identity
- 全国人民团结一心... (The people of the whole nation, united as one...)
Framing (框架)
Political language frames issues to guide interpretation:
- Problem → Who is responsible → What solution is preferred
- 稳定 (stability) as a frame shifts attention from rights to order
Recognising agenda (议程)
What topics are emphasised? What is absent?
- 官方叙事 emphasises: 发展、稳定、民族复兴
- Counter-narratives may highlight: 权利、透明度、问责
