Constructive Feedback in Chinese

Giving feedback well in Chinese requires balancing directness with face-saving (面子). At C1, you must deliver precise, specific feedback without being harsh.

The sandwich structure (三明治法):

1. Start with affirmation (肯定): 你在……方面做得很好，我特别欣赏…… (You did really well on..., I particularly appreciate...) 2. Deliver the critique (批评): 不过，在……方面，我觉得还有改进的空间 (However, in terms of..., I think there is room for improvement) 3. End with encouragement (激励): 我相信以你的能力，一定能在这方面进一步提升 (I am confident that with your ability, you can definitely improve further in this area)

Rules for constructive criticism in Chinese:

• Be specific (具体): not 写得不好 (written badly), but 这段论证的逻辑还需要加强 (the logic in this paragraph needs strengthening)
• Avoid public criticism: 当众批评 is damaging to face; give negative feedback privately
• Use 委婉 (tactful) language: 如果……的话，效果可能会更好 (If..., the result might be even better)

Cultural note: In Chinese professional culture, indirect feedback is often preferred. Learning when to be direct and when to hedge is a key C1 skill.
