Climate change in Chinese
Adding information: 此外 / 另外 / 除此之外
These three formal connectors add information but with different nuances:
- 此外 (cǐwài) — furthermore (most formal, written): 此外，极端天气事件也在增加。 — Furthermore, extreme weather events are also increasing.
- 另外 (lìngwài) — additionally (slightly less formal): 另外，海平面上升威胁沿海城市。
- 除此之外 (chú cǐ zhī wài) — other than this / besides: 除此之外，生物多样性的损失同样令人担忧。
越来越… (yuèláiyuè…) — increasingly
Expresses a growing trend:
- 气温越来越高。 — Temperatures are getting higher and higher.
- 解决气候问题越来越紧迫。 — Solving climate problems is becoming increasingly urgent.
非…不可 (fēi… bùkě) — must / have no choice
Expresses strong necessity or inevitability:
- 我们非采取行动不可。 — We absolutely must take action.
- 这个问题非解决不可。 — This problem must be resolved.
表达
- 越来越严重To describe a worsening situation
- 此外To add a formal supporting point in writing
- 非…不可To assert that action is absolutely necessary
- 可持续发展To discuss sustainable development
- 减少碳排放To talk about reducing carbon emissions
- 极端天气To refer to extreme weather events
- 除此之外To add a final supplementary point
- 对…负责To assert responsibility toward the environment
常见错误
越来越的严重越来越严重越来越 is directly followed by the adjective without 的. Do not insert 的 between 越来越 and the adjective.
非解决不行非解决不可The fixed pattern is 非…不可. Using 不行 instead of 不可 breaks the formal structure.
此外，但是极端天气也增加。此外，极端天气也在增加。此外 and 但是 should not be combined. 此外 adds information, 但是 introduces contrast — they serve different purposes.
越来越气温高气温越来越高越来越 must directly precede the adjective it modifies. The subject (气温) comes first, then 越来越+adjective.
除此之外，我们需要更多做。除此之外，我们需要做更多。更多 (more) must precede the verb or come at the end of the predicate, not between 需要 and the verb.
