The art of persuasion in Chinese
Persuading in Chinese requires specific logical connectors and rhetorical structures that go beyond simple agreement or disagreement.
Conditional persuasion: 要是…就… (yàoshi… jiù…)
Used to present scenarios and logical consequences:
- 要是你现在不采取行动，情况就会越来越糟。 — If you don't act now, the situation will keep getting worse.
- 要是我们合作，就能事半功倍。 — If we work together, we can achieve twice the result with half the effort.
Escalating the argument: 更何况 (gèng hékuàng)
Introduces a stronger point after a first argument:
- 这个方法效率不高，更何况成本也很高。 — This method is inefficient, let alone costly.
Redirecting gently: 倒不如说 (dào bùrú shuō)
Politely corrects or reframes a statement:
- 这不是失败，倒不如说是一次宝贵的经验。 — This isn't failure; it would be more accurate to call it a valuable experience.
Adding reasons: 再说 (zài shuō) / 毕竟 (bìjìng)
- 再说 adds another supporting argument: 这样做既省时，再说也省钱。
- 毕竟 introduces an undeniable truth: 毕竟，我们都是为了共同的目标。
表达
- 要是…就…To present a conditional scenario and its consequence
- 更何况To add an even stronger supporting argument
- 倒不如说To politely reframe or correct a previous statement
- 再说To add one more supporting reason
- 毕竟To invoke an undeniable truth at the end of an argument
- 显而易见To present something as self-evident
- 不可否认To acknowledge a fact the other person cannot dispute
- 足以证明To conclude that evidence supports your point
常见错误
要是你来，我就很高兴了。要是你来，我就很高兴。In a 要是…就… structure, do not add 了 at the end. The conditional already implies a hypothetical — 了 is redundant.
更何况他是一个专家，所以我们应该听他。更何况他是一个专家，我们更应该听他。更何况 already escalates the argument — 所以 is redundant. Keep the escalating logic implicit.
毕竟，但是他还是错的。毕竟，他还是错的。毕竟 and 但是 cannot be combined at the start of a clause — they serve different logical functions.
这足以证明了我的观点。这足以证明我的观点。足以证明 is a fixed expression followed directly by the object. The 了 is grammatically incorrect here.
倒不如说是，这是一个机会。倒不如说，这是一个机会。Remove the extra 是 after 倒不如说. The structure is 倒不如说 + full clause, not 倒不如说是 + noun.
