Humour and irony in Chinese

Humour and irony in Chinese rely on rhetorical structures, modal particles, and the strategic use of understatement or exaggeration.

Rhetorical patterns

• 难道…吗？(nándào… ma?) — expresses ironic disbelief: 难道你还觉得这是个好主意吗？ — You still think this is a good idea?
• 不是…吗？(bùshì… ma?) — highlights an obvious contradiction: 你不是说好不迟到的吗？ — Didn't you promise not to be late?

The particle 嘛 (ma with falling tone)

Signals that something is obvious or should be understood without explanation:

• 他当然不懂嘛，他没学过。 — Of course he doesn't get it — he never studied it.

The particle 呗 (bei)

Signals reluctant acceptance or "what did you expect?":

• 那就这样呗。 — Well, that's just how it is then.
• 你不愿意去就算了呗。 — If you don't want to go, fine then.

偏偏 (piānpiān) — perverse irony

Signals an outcome contrary to what was desired or expected:

• 偏偏就在最忙的时候停电了。 — Of all times, the power went out exactly when we were busiest.
• 我偏偏不喜欢吃他最拿手的菜。 — Of all things, I happen not to like his signature dish.
