The Four Tones of Mandarin
Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language with 4 tones (plus a neutral tone). The same syllable can mean completely different things depending on the tone.
The four tones using "ma" as example
- mā (第一声) — flat, like singing one high note → 妈 (mother)
- má (第二声) — rising, like asking a question → 麻 (hemp)
- mǎ (第三声) — falls then rises, like a rollercoaster → 马 (horse)
- mà (第四声) — falling sharply, like giving a command → 骂 (to scold)
- ma (轻声) — short, unstressed → 吗 (question marker)
Pinyin basics
Pinyin uses the Latin alphabet plus tone marks. Key sounds different from English:
- x sounds like "sh" (softer): 西 (xī, west)
- zh sounds like "j" in "judge": 中 (zhōng, middle)
- q sounds like "ch" (fronted): 七 (qī, seven)
- c sounds like "ts": 次 (cì, time/occurrence)
💬 Remember: Tones are essential! 买 (mǎi, to buy) vs 卖 (mài, to sell) — wrong tone = wrong meaning!

常见错误
忽略声调注意声调Tones are essential: 买 (buy) and 卖 (sell) differ only in tone
