Describing Your Home
在 (zài) — location verb
Use 在 to say where someone or something is located.
- Subject + 在 + location
- 我在家。 (Wǒ zài jiā.) → I am at home.
- 书在桌子上。 (Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.) → The book is on the table.
Location words
These come AFTER the noun they modify:
- 里 (lǐ) — inside: 房间里 (in the room)
- 上 (shàng) — on top: 桌子上 (on the table)
- 下 (xià) — under: 桌子下 (under the table)
- 旁边 (pángbiān) — next to: 桌子旁边 (next to the table)
- 前面 (qiánmian) — in front of
- 后面 (hòumian) — behind
💬 Example: "我家有三个房间：一个客厅、两个卧室。" (Wǒ jiā yǒu sān gè fángjiān: yī gè kètīng, liǎng gè wòshì.) → "My home has three rooms: one living room, two bedrooms."

- 我家很大Describing the size of your home
- 我住在公寓里Saying you live in an apartment
- 厨房在哪里？Asking where the kitchen is
- 我的卧室在二楼Saying your bedroom is on the second floor
- 洗手间在左边Saying the bathroom is on the left
- 请进！Inviting someone to come in
常见错误
书在上桌子书在桌子上Location words come AFTER the noun they modify
我在家里面我在家 or 我在家里里面 is redundant when used with 在
厨房里有在厨房里有...在 and 有 serve different purposes, don t mix them
我住公寓我住在公寓里Need 在 and 里 when specifying the living location
房间在左旁房间在左边Use 左边 for on the left, not 左旁
