Advanced creative writing in Spanish

Spanish-language literature offers a range of sophisticated narrative techniques, from magical realism to interior monologue.

Narrative techniques

  • The narrador omnisciente knows all the thoughts and feelings of the characters, a classic voice in Spanish novels
  • The monólogo interior reproduces a character's flow of thoughts without narrator intervention
  • Corriente de conciencia goes further, abolishing conventional punctuation and syntax
  • Flashback allows temporal leaps backward, while presagio foreshadows future events

Narrative structure

  • The trama is the sequence of main events; the subtrama is a secondary storyline
  • The arco narrativo refers to the evolution of a character or situation from beginning to end
  • The clímax is the point of maximum tension, followed by the desenlace
  • Elipsis narrativa allows certain periods to be passed over in silence, accelerating the narrative

Voice and perspective

  • The voz narrativa determines the tone and style of the narrative
  • The punto de vista can be first, second, or third person
  • The leitmotiv is a recurring theme or motif that gives coherence to the text

Zwroty

  • El autor recurre al flashbackThe author resorts to flashback
  • La trama se desarrolla en tres actosThe plot unfolds in three acts
  • El narrador no es fiableThe narrator is unreliable
  • La historia alcanza su clímaxThe story reaches its climax
  • El leitmotiv recorre toda la obraThe leitmotif runs through the work
  • Romper la cuarta paredTo break the fourth wall
  • El desenlace es inesperadoThe denouement is unexpected

Typowe błędy

La trama de la novela es interesante

In literary criticism, specify the genre: "novela", "cuento" — not just "libro"

  • El clímax de la historia sucede al final
El clímax de la historia se produce al final

"Producirse" is more precise than "suceder" for a planned narrative event

  • El narrador cuenta en primera persona
El narrador narra en primera persona

In literary terminology, "narrar" is more technical than "contar"

  • Usar un flashback
Emplear / recurrir a un flashback

In literary register, "emplear" or "recurrir a" are preferred over "usar"
