Non-restrictive relative clauses in Spanish
For sophisticated film criticism, non-restrictive relative clauses add supplementary information without limiting meaning.
- Lo cual (which) to comment on an entire fact:
La película dura tres horas, lo cual puede resultar excesivo. — The film lasts three hours, which may seem excessive.
- Quien/quienes (who) with comma for people:
El director, quien ganó un Óscar, vuelve con un nuevo film. — The director, who won an Oscar, returns with a new film.
- Cuyo/cuya (whose) for possession:
El actor, cuya actuación fue brillante, merece un premio. — The actor, whose performance was brilliant, deserves an award.
These structures give your reviews a more literary and professional tone. The comma before the relative pronoun is mandatory.
