Irregular Verbs in the Pretérito Indefinido

Some of the most common Spanish verbs are irregular in the past tense. They do not follow the regular patterns and must be memorized.

Key Irregular Verbs

ir (to go) → fui → fuiste → fue
hacer (to do) → hice → hiciste → hizo
tener (to have) → tuve → tuviste → tuvo
estar (to be) → estuve → estuviste → estuvo

Example: "El fin de semana pasado fui al campo." → "Last weekend I went to the countryside."
Example: "Hice una excursión increíble." → "I did an incredible hike."

Important Notes

ir and ser share the same past forms (fui, fuiste, fue...). Context tells them apart.
hacer changes its stem to hic- (and hiz- for él/ella).
tener and estar use the stems tuv- and estuv- with special endings (-e, -iste, -o).

Tip: These irregular verbs do NOT have accent marks on yo or él/ella forms, unlike regular verbs.

Ir is completely irregular in the pretérito indefinido. The form is fui, not ía.
~~Yo hací una excursión.~~
Yo hice una excursión.
Hacer changes its stem to hic- in the pretérito indefinido. The correct form is hice.
~~Yo tení un buen fin de semana.~~
Yo tuve un buen fin de semana.
Tener changes its stem to tuv- in the pretérito indefinido. The correct form is tuve.
~~Yo esté en casa de mis abuelos.~~
Yo estuve en casa de mis abuelos.
Estar changes its stem to estuv- in the pretérito indefinido. Do not confuse with the subjunctive esté.
~~Él hice los deberes.~~
Él hizo los deberes.
The third person of hacer is hizo (with z), not hice (which is first person).
