Debemos / Tenemos que + infinitive

In Spanish, there are two common ways to express obligation or necessity:

1. Deber + infinitive (moral obligation)

Debemos expresses what we should or ought to do — a moral duty.

Debemos reciclar más. → We should recycle more.
Debemos proteger el planeta. → We must protect the planet.
yo → debo
tú → debes
él/ella → debe
nosotros → debemos
ellos/ellas → deben

2. Tener que + infinitive (strong obligation)

Tenemos que expresses what we have to do — a stronger, more practical obligation.

Tenemos que ahorrar energía. → We have to save energy.
Tienes que separar la basura. → You have to separate the rubbish.

Tip: Think of deber as "should" and tener que as "have to". Both are followed by an infinitive.
Example: "No debemos usar tanto plástico." → "We should not use so much plastic."
Example: "Tenemos que reducir los residuos." → "We have to reduce waste."

Typowe błędy

Deber is followed directly by the infinitive. No preposition a is needed.
~~Tenemos de ahorrar energía.~~
Tenemos que ahorrar energía.
The correct structure is tener que + infinitive, not tener de.
~~La contaminación es un problema gravo.~~
La contaminación es un problema grave.
Grave does not change for gender. It is always grave, not gravo.
~~Nosotros debemos proteger la planeta.~~
Debemos proteger el planeta.
Planeta is masculine in Spanish (el planeta), even though it ends in -a. Also, the pronoun nosotros is optional.
~~Tengo que reciclar las plásticos.~~
Tengo que reciclar los plásticos.
Plástico is masculine: los plásticos, not las plásticos.
