The verb "ser" (to be)
In Spanish, the verb ser is used to express identity, origin, and permanent characteristics. At the A1 level, you need two forms:
- Yo soy → I am
- Tú eres → You are
Example: "Yo soy María." → "I am María."
Example: "Tú eres estudiante." → "You are a student."
Formal vs informal greetings
Spanish distinguishes between formal and informal situations:
- Informal: Hola works any time of day, like "Hi" in English.
- Formal: Use Buenos días (morning), Buenas tardes (afternoon), Buenas noches (evening).
Note that buenas is feminine because it agrees with the hidden nouns (mañanas, tardes, noches), while buenos is masculine (días).
When meeting someone, say Mucho gusto (nice to meet you). The other person may reply Igualmente (likewise) or El gusto es mío (the pleasure is mine).

Mucha gustoMucho gustoGusto is masculine, so the adjective must be mucho, not mucha.
Hola, yo soy soy MaríaHola, yo soy MaríaDo not repeat the verb ser. One soy is enough.
Buenos nochesBuenas nochesNoches is feminine, so it requires buenas, not buenos.
Gracias túGraciasGracias does not need a pronoun after it. Say gracias on its own.
