Colors and Gender Agreement
Colors that change with gender
Most colors agree in gender with the noun they describe:
- vermelho — vermelha
- branco — branca
- preto — preta
- amarelo — amarela
- castanho — castanha
Examples:
- o carro vermelho → the red car
- a camisola vermelha → the red sweater
Colors that do NOT change
Some colors are invariable (same for masculine and feminine):
- azul → o carro azul / a camisola azul
- verde → o casaco verde / a saia verde
- cor-de-rosa → pink (always the same)
- cor-de-laranja → orange (always the same)
Describing materials
Use de + material:
- uma camisola de lã → a wool sweater
- uns sapatos de couro → leather shoes
- uma camisa de algodão → a cotton shirt
Tip: "Castanho" is used for brown in European Portuguese (not "marrom" which is Brazilian).

Typowe błędy
A camisola vermelho.A camisola vermelha.Camisola is feminine — the color must agree: vermelha (not vermelho).
O carro é azula.O carro é azul.Azul is invariable — it does not change for gender or number.
Uma camisola em lã.Uma camisola de lã.Use de (not em) to describe what material something is made of.
Eu gosto o castanho.Eu gosto do castanho.Gostar de requires de — do = de + o (contraction).
