The Portuguese Alphabet
The Portuguese alphabet has 26 letters, the same as English. However, the pronunciation is very different:
- A (á), B (bê), C (cê), D (dê), E (é)
- F (efe), G (gê), H (agá), I (i), J (jota)
- K (capa), L (ele), M (eme), N (ene), O (ó)
Special Characters
Portuguese uses several accents and special characters:
- ã / õ → nasal sounds (unique to Portuguese!)
- ç → "s" sound (cedilha)
- á, é, ó → open vowels with acute accent
- â, ê, ô → closed vowels with circumflex
💬 Example: "Como se escreve?" → "How do you spell it?"
💬 Example: "M-A-R-I-A" → spelling out a name
Email Addresses
- @ is called arroba in Portuguese
- . is called ponto
- maria@email.pt → "maria, arroba, email, ponto, pt"

Typowe błędy
Pronouncing H in PortugueseH is silent in PortugueseUnlike English, H is always silent in Portuguese: hotel = otel.
Ignoring the cedilha (ç)Always write ç before a, o, uÇ makes an s sound: França, coração. Without it, ca would be ka.
Confusing ã and anã is a nasal vowelThe til (~) creates a nasal sound, different from a+n.
Using English letter namesLearn Portuguese letter namesLetter names are different: R is erre, W is dáblio, Y is ípsilon.
Forgetting accents when spellingAlways mention accentsSay the accent type: acento agudo (á), til (ã), cedilha (ç).
