The Verb "Ser" (To Be)

In Portuguese, the verb ser is one of the most important verbs. It is used for permanent characteristics and identity. In the present tense, it changes depending on the person:

  • eu sou → I am
  • tu és → you are (informal)
  • você é → you are (formal)

💬 Example: "Eu sou o João." → "I am João."

💬 Example: "Tu és simpático." → "You are nice."

Formal vs Informal Greetings

Portuguese has different greetings depending on the time of day:

  • MorningBom dia (Good morning)
  • AfternoonBoa tarde (Good afternoon)
  • Evening/NightBoa noite (Good evening / Good night)

Unlike English, "Boa noite" is used BOTH to greet someone in the evening AND to say goodnight when leaving.

For informal situations among friends, you can simply say "Olá" or "Oi" — these work at any time of day!

Zwroty

  • Prazer em conhecê-loWhen meeting someone formally
  • Como está?Asking how someone is (formal)
  • Estou bem, obrigadoReplying to How are you?
  • Até logoInformal goodbye
  • Tenha um bom diaWishing someone a nice day
  • Com licençaGetting someone's attention politely

Typowe błędy

  • Eu sou bem
    Eu estou bem

Use ESTAR (not ser) for temporary states like feeling well.

  • Bom noite
    Boa noite

Noite is feminine, so the adjective must be boa (not bom).

  • Obrigado (said by a woman)
    Obrigada

Women say obrigada, men say obrigado — it agrees with the speaker.

  • Eu sou prazer
    Prazer em conhecê-lo

Prazer is a fixed expression, not used with ser.

  • Boa dia
    Bom dia

Dia is masculine, so the adjective must be bom (not boa).
