Ordering at a Restaurant

Learn the typical flow of ordering a meal in Portugal.

Arriving and getting a table

  • Tem uma mesa para dois? → Do you have a table for two?
  • Posso ver a ementa? → Can I see the menu?

Ordering food

Use queria for polite orders:

  • Queria o prato do dia. → I would like the dish of the day.
  • Para mim, a sopa. → For me, the soup.
  • E para beber? → And to drink?

Asking about the food

  • O que recomenda? → What do you recommend?
  • Tem pratos vegetarianos? → Do you have vegetarian dishes?
  • Este prato é picante? → Is this dish spicy?

Paying

  • A conta, se faz favor. → The bill, please.
  • Está incluído o serviço? → Is service included?

Tip: In Portugal, bread and olives are often brought to the table automatically — but they are not free! You can politely decline with "Não, obrigado/a."

    In European Portuguese, the menu is called ementa, not menu.

  • Queria o prato de dia.
    Queria o prato do dia.

    Use the contraction do (de + o), not de o separately.

  • Pode trazer o conta?
    Pode trazer a conta?

    Conta is feminine — use a conta, not o conta.

  • Eu queria um prato vegetariano, obrigado.
    Queria um prato vegetariano, por favor.

    Use por favor when requesting. Obrigado/a is for thanking after receiving.
