Present Indicative

Portuguese regular verbs follow three conjugation patterns based on their ending (-ar, -er, -ir):

-ar verbs (e.g., acordar — to wake up):

  • eu acordo, tu acordas, ele acorda

-er verbs (e.g., comer — to eat):

  • eu como, tu comes, ele come

-ir verbs (e.g., dormir — to sleep):

  • eu durmo, tu dormes, ele dorme

💬 Example: "Eu acordo às sete horas." → "I wake up at seven."

Adverbs of Frequency

  • sempre → always: "Eu sempre tomo o pequeno-almoço."
  • nunca → never: "Eu nunca durmo tarde."
  • às vezes → sometimes: "Às vezes trabalho em casa."

These adverbs usually come before the verb.

Zwroty

  • Acordo às sete horasSaying what time you wake up
  • Tomo o pequeno-almoçoHaving breakfast
  • Vou trabalhar de manhãGoing to work in the morning
  • Almoço ao meio-diaHaving lunch at noon
  • Deito-me às onzeGoing to bed at eleven
  • O que fazes de manhã?Asking about morning routine

Typowe błędy

  • Eu acordas às sete
    Eu acordo às sete

With eu, the verb ending is -o, not -as. Acordas is for tu.

  • Eu como o pequeno-almoço
    Eu tomo o pequeno-almoço

In Portuguese, you TAKE breakfast (tomar), not EAT it.

  • Eu nunca não durmo tarde
    Eu nunca durmo tarde

Don't use double negatives with nunca — nunca already means never.

  • Eu me levanto
    Eu levanto-me

In European PT, reflexive pronouns go after the verb (not before).

  • De manhã eu acordo e eu como
    De manhã acordo e como

No need to repeat eu — it's implied after the first use.
