Talking About the Weather
Portuguese uses estar (not ser) for weather because it describes temporary conditions.
The verb "estar" for weather
- Está sol — It's sunny
- Está a chover — It's raining
- Está vento — It's windy
- Está frio — It's cold
- Está calor — It's hot
Key pattern: "Está a + infinitive"
To describe ongoing weather, use está a + verb:
- Está a chover → It's raining
- Está a nevar → It's snowing
- Está a fazer vento → It's being windy
"Fazer" for weather
Fazer is also used in weather expressions:
- Faz calor → It's hot (lit. "it makes heat")
- Faz frio → It's cold
- Faz bom tempo → The weather is nice
- Faz mau tempo → The weather is bad
Tip: Use estar for current conditions and fazer for general temperature/weather quality.
