Writing Summaries in Academic Japanese

The である体 (dearu style) is the standard writing style for Japanese academic texts, replacing です/ます with plain forms and である for na-adjectives and nouns.

である体 vs です/ます体

  • です/ます: この問題は重要です → である: この問題は重要である
  • です/ます: 研究が必要です → である: 研究が必要である

Key Summary Structures

When paraphrasing an author's argument:

  • 著者は~と述べている — "The author states that..."
  • ~と考えられる — "It is considered that..." (hedged assertion)
  • ~と指摘されている — "It has been pointed out that..."

Connector Usage

Academic summaries require precise connectors:

  • すなわち — "namely" (restates with precision)
  • 換言すれば — "in other words" (formal paraphrase)
  • したがって — "therefore" (logical conclusion)

Mastering these patterns transforms casual writing into polished academic prose.

Zwroty

  • 著者は~と述べているAttribute a statement to an author
  • ~と考えられるExpress a hedged academic assertion
  • 換言すればRephrase formally in other words
  • すなわちRestate with precision (namely)
  • 以上のことからDraw conclusions from prior points
  • 要約するとIntroduce a summary statement

Typowe błędy

  • この問題は重要です
    この問題は重要である

Academic summaries use である体, not です/ます体.

  • 著者は言っている
    著者は述べている

In academic writing, use 述べる (state formally), not 言う (say casually).

  • つまり
    すなわち

In formal academic style, prefer すなわち over the casual つまり.

  • 考えられると思う
    と考えられる

Do not add 思う after 考えられる; it is already hedged.

  • 結論は~だと思います
    結論として~と言える

Use academic phrasing と言える (it can be said) in conclusions.
