Japanese Counters: つ (tsu)
Japanese uses counters when counting things. The most versatile counter is つ — it works for almost anything:
💬 Example: "りんごを みっつ ください" → "Three apples, please"
- ひとつ → 1 thing
- ふたつ → 2 things
- みっつ → 3 things
- よっつ → 4 things
- いつつ → 5 things
Note: These are special readings, not simply adding つ to the number!
いくつ (ikutsu) — How Many?
Use いくつ to ask "how many?":
💬 Example: "りんごを いくつ ですか？" → "How many apples?"
Shopping structure
The pattern for buying things is:
[item] を [counter] ください
- たまごを いつつ ください → Five eggs, please
- パンを ひとつ ください → One bread, please

- りんごを みっつ くださいThree apples, please

- ふくろは いりますかDo you need a bag?

Typowe błędy
いち りんごりんごを ひとつUse ひとつ counter, not いち (number). Counter goes after the object
りんご みっつを くださいりんごを みっつ くださいThe particle を goes after the item, not after the counter
さん りんごりんごを みっつDon't use regular numbers — use the つ counter series
たかいです ないたかくないですい-adjectives change to くない for negation, not い + ない
いくつ りんご ですかりんごは いくつ ですかThe item comes first, followed by は, then いくつ
