Diplomatic Register, the Passive in Official Discourse, and Euphemistic Constructions
Geopolitical discourse in Italian at C2 level requires mastery of formal register, strategic use of the passive voice, and the art of euphemism.
The Diplomatic Register
Italian diplomatic language favors impersonal and distancing constructions:
Si auspica che le parti raggiungano un accordo.
(It is hoped that the parties will reach an agreement.)
Il governo ha espresso profonda preoccupazione.
(The government expressed deep concern.)
Notice how esprimere preoccupazione is the standard diplomatic formula — stronger words like rabbia (anger) are avoided.
The Passive in Official Discourse
The passive voice is ubiquitous in official statements, depersonalizing actions and obscuring agency:
Le sanzioni sono state imposte dal Consiglio di Sicurezza.
(Sanctions were imposed by the Security Council.)
È stato raggiunto un cessate il fuoco.
(A ceasefire has been reached.)
The si passivante construction further removes agency:
Si è deciso di procedere con le negoziazioni.
(It was decided to proceed with negotiations.)
Euphemistic Constructions
Diplomatic Italian replaces direct language with softened alternatives:
- conflitto armato instead of guerra (armed conflict vs. war)
- danni collaterali instead of vittime civili (collateral damage vs. civilian casualties)
- intervento umanitario instead of invasione (humanitarian intervention vs. invasion)
- ridispiegamento delle forze instead of ritirata (redeployment of forces vs. retreat)
Mastering these euphemisms is essential for understanding — and critically analyzing — geopolitical discourse at C2 level.
