Advanced Participles in Opinion Writing

Italian opinion articles rely on sophisticated grammatical structures to build credibility and nuance. Mastering advanced participle constructions is key to writing persuasive editorials.

Compound Participles

The structure Avendo + past participle expresses a completed action that precedes the main clause: "Avendo considerato tutti i fattori, possiamo concludere che..." (Having considered all factors, we can conclude that...). This construction lends formality and logical weight to your argument.

Similarly, Essendo + past participle is used with verbs that take essere: "Essendo stata pubblicata la notizia, il dibattito si è acceso." (The news having been published, the debate heated up.)

Causal Participles

Dato che and Visto che introduce causal clauses that justify a position: "Dato che i media influenzano l'opinione pubblica, è fondamentale un'analisi critica." These structures help opinion writers establish their logical framework before stating their thesis.

Building an Argument

In Italian editorials, the writer typically presents the angolazione (angle), acknowledges opposing views to appear imparziale, then uses these advanced structures to build a convincente case for their posizione.

Zwroty

  • A mio avvisoTo introduce your personal opinion formally
  • Da un lato... dall'altroTo present two sides of an argument
  • Non si può negare cheTo acknowledge an undeniable fact
  • Vale la pena sottolineareTo highlight an important point
  • Alla luce di quanto dettoTo summarize before a conclusion
  • In conclusioneTo introduce the final statement

Typowe błędy

Essendo arrivato in ritardo, ho perso il dibattito.

Arrivare takes essere, so use essendo, not avendo

  • L'editore del giornale ha scritto un articolo.
L'editorialista del giornale ha scritto un articolo.

Editore = publisher; editorialista = editorial writer

  • Avendo considerato i fatti, la conclusione è chiaro.
Avendo considerato i fatti, la conclusione è chiara.

Conclusione is feminine, so the adjective must be chiara

  • Il suo giudizio contro gli immigrati.
Il suo pregiudizio contro gli immigrati.

    Pregiudizio = prejudice/bias; giudizio = judgment

  • Essendo partiti la delegazione, il summit è finito.
Essendo partita la delegazione, il summit è finito.

Delegazione is feminine singular: partita, not partiti
