Regular plurals and the pronouns noi/loro
Regular plural in Italian:
Forming the plural follows predictable patterns based on the noun ending:
- -o (masc.) → -i : amico → amici, libro → libri
- -a (fem.) → -e : amica → amiche, pizza → pizze
- -e (masc./fem.) → -i : studente → studenti, classe → classi
Special spelling rules to preserve pronunciation:
When a noun ends in -co/-ca or -go/-ga, an h is added in the plural to keep the hard sound:
- amico → amichi (male friends)
- amica → amiche (female friends)
- lago → laghi (lakes)
Exception: amico → amici (this one drops the h, irregular!)
The pronouns noi and loro:
- Noi : We — Noi abbiamo molti amici.
- Loro : They — Loro abitano a Milano.
Subject pronouns are often dropped in Italian because the verb ending already indicates the subject. However, noi and loro are dropped less often than io or tu, especially for emphasis or clarity.
- Abbiamo molti amici. → We have many friends. (noi dropped)
- Noi siamo italiani, loro sono francesi. → We are Italian, they are French. (emphasis)
💬 Esempio: "Noi siamo amici da dieci anni." → "We have been friends for ten years."
💬 Esempio: "I miei amici abitano vicino a me." → "My friends live near me."
💬 Esempio: "Loro hanno due gatti e un cane." → "They have two cats and a dog."
