Translation and Adaptation in Hindi
Translation (अनुवाद) is one of the most philosophically complex acts of language. The Hindi translation tradition is ancient — Sanskrit texts were translated into Apabhramsha and then Hindi across centuries — and the questions that animated those translators remain urgent: should a translation be faithful to the word (शब्द) or to the spirit (भाव)?
The two dominant schools in Hindi translation theory are शाब्दिक अनुवाद (literal translation) and भावानुवाद (sense translation). Literal translation preserves lexical fidelity but can produce stilted prose; भावानुवाद sacrifices surface form for communicative equivalence. At C2, you should be able to move fluidly between both modes depending on text type.
Cultural adaptation (सांस्कृतिक रूपांतरण) poses the deepest challenges. When translating English idioms into Hindi — or vice versa — a direct equivalence often does not exist. The translator must choose between foreignisation (विदेशीकरण), which preserves cultural distance, and domestication (देशीकरण), which naturalises the text for local readers.
Poetry translation is perhaps the most extreme test. Translating Keats into Hindi requires decisions about metre (छन्द), rhyme (तुकबंदी), and which Sanskrit or Urdu poetic conventions best approximate the original affect. Ajneya s translations and Kedarnath Singh s own work on translation theory offer essential models.
The concept of समतुल्यता (equivalence) has been critiqued by postcolonial translation scholars who argue that no translation is ever neutral — it always carries power, ideology, and the translator s own cultural position within it.
