Separable Verbs (trennbare Verben)
Some German verbs are separable: they have a prefix that detaches and moves to the end of the sentence.
How It Works
anfangen (to start) → Ich fange um 9 Uhr an. — I start at 9.
aufhören (to stop) → Er hört um 17 Uhr auf. — He stops at 5 PM.
anrufen (to call) → Sie ruft den Chef an. — She calls the boss.
Common Separable Prefixes
- an- (anfangen, anrufen, ankommen)
- auf- (aufstehen, aufhören, aufräumen)
- ein- (einkaufen, einladen)
- mit- (mitkommen, mitbringen)
In the Perfekt
The ge- is inserted between the prefix and verb:
anfangen → an-ge-fangen: Ich habe um 9 Uhr angefangen.
anrufen → an-ge-rufen: Er hat mich angerufen.
