The Perfekt with sein
Some verbs form the Perfekt with sein instead of haben. These are mainly verbs of movement and change of state.
How to Form It
Use the present tense of sein + the past participle:
Ich bin gegangen. — I went.
Er ist gefahren. — He drove / went.
Wir sind gewandert. — We hiked.
Common Verbs with sein
- gehen → gegangen (to go)
- fahren → gefahren (to drive / go)
- kommen → gekommen (to come)
- bleiben → geblieben (to stay)
- schwimmen → geschwommen (to swim)
- laufen → gelaufen (to run)
Tip
If the verb expresses movement from A to B or a change of state (to become, to die, to be born), use sein. Otherwise, use haben.
