Quantities at the Market
At the market, you need to express precise quantities. In German, units of measurement are often used without an article connecting them.
Quantity expressions:
- ein Kilo Äpfel (a kilo of apples) — no "of" in German!
- eine Flasche Wasser (a bottle of water)
- zwei Stück Kuchen (two pieces of cake)
- eine Packung Reis (a package of rice)
- ein Beutel Kartoffeln (a bag of potatoes)
At the market — useful phrases:
- Ich hätte gerne ein Kilo Tomaten. (I would like a kilo of tomatoes.)
- Was kostet das Kilo? (How much per kilo?)
- Haben Sie frischen Fisch? (Do you have fresh fish?)
- Das ist alles, danke. (That's all, thank you.)
Note: Quantity nouns don't use genitive in German: say ein Glas Wasser (a glass of water), not ein Glas von Wasser. The following noun stays in the same case as the quantity.
