Political discourse uses rhetorical devices to persuade audiences. Recognizing these techniques is essential for critical analysis at C1 level.

Key rhetorical devices:

  • Anaphore (repetition): "Je veux une France qui..., je veux une France où..."
  • Tricolon (rule of three): "Liberté, égalité, fraternité."
  • Appel émotionnel: Using stories and imagery to evoke feelings

Analyzing political language:

  • Le cadrage (framing): How an issue is presented shapes opinion
  • Le récit (narrative): Politicians construct stories to explain complex issues
  • Le sous-texte (subtext): The implied meaning behind the words

Critical questions to ask:

  • Quel est l'agenda de l'orateur ? (What is the speaker's agenda?)
  • Quelles techniques rhétoriques sont utilisées ? (Which rhetorical techniques are used?)
  • Quelle est la part de manipulation ? (How much manipulation is there?)

Understanding these tools helps you both analyze and produce persuasive French discourse.
