Taalunie & Standard Dutch

The Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) is the intergovernmental organization that manages Dutch language policy for the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname. It publishes the official spelling rules via the Groene Boekje (Green Booklet) and promotes Dutch language and literature worldwide.

Standard Dutch has evolved through centuries of taalstrijd (language struggle). In Belgium, the fight to establish Dutch as equal to French in public life was a defining cultural battle. In the Netherlands, the creation of ABN (Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands) established a prestige norm based on the western Randstad dialect.

Modern debates focus on taalvariatie vs taalnorm. Should the standard accommodate regional differences, or should one norm prevail? The rise of tussentaal in Belgium — an informal register between dialect and standard — challenges traditional norms.

Spelling reforms remain contentious. The 1995 and 2005 reforms changed the spelling of hundreds of words, causing public debates about language ownership. At C2 level, understanding these institutional dynamics is essential for grasping the political and cultural dimensions of the Dutch language.
