Hedging is the art of expressing uncertainty or caution in academic Dutch. Rather than making absolute claims, C1-level writers soften their assertions to appear more scholarly and precise.
Common hedging expressions:
- Men zou kunnen stellen dat... (One could argue that...)
- Dit suggereert dat... (This suggests that...)
- Het lijkt erop dat... (It appears that...)
- Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid... (In all probability...)
Modal verbs for hedging:
- kunnen (could/can): Dit kan wijzen op... (This could indicate...)
- zouden (would): Dit zou betekenen dat... (This would mean that...)
- lijken (to seem): De resultaten lijken te bevestigen... (The results seem to confirm...)
Adverbs of probability: mogelijk (possibly), wellicht (perhaps), vermoedelijk (presumably), waarschijnlijk (probably), ongetwijfeld (undoubtedly).
Avoiding overclaiming: Instead of Dit bewijst dat... (This proves that...), write Dit wijst erop dat... (This indicates that...) or Dit doet vermoeden dat... (This suggests that...). Academic Dutch values precision and intellectual humility over bold claims.

Het is zeker dat...Het lijkt erop dat... / Het is aannemelijk dat...Avoid absolute certainty; use hedging for academic nuance.
Wij geloven dat...Men zou kunnen stellen dat...Academic writing uses impersonal constructions, not first person beliefs.
Misschien dat het waar is.Het valt niet uit te sluiten dat het waar is.Misschien is too informal; use formal hedging expressions.
De resultaten bewijzen duidelijk...De resultaten wijzen er sterk op dat...Even strong evidence should be hedged with wijzen op rather than bewijzen.
