To talk about animals in their habitats, use er leven (there live): Er leven veel konijnen in Nederland (Many rabbits live in the Netherlands). Use kunnen for animal abilities: Vogels kunnen vliegen (Birds can fly), Vissen kunnen zwemmen (Fish can swim). For location: De vos leeft in het bos (The fox lives in the forest). The plural of het dier is de dieren — note the article changes! Some animals are uniquely Dutch: the egel (hedgehog) is common in gardens, and eenden (ducks) are everywhere near canals. To say something is endangered: De otter is een bedreigd dier (The otter is an endangered animal). Use beschermen (to protect): We moeten dieren beschermen (We must protect animals).
