The Post-Truth Era in Chinese

Discussing post-truth phenomena in Chinese requires mastery of specific discourse strategies and a nuanced understanding of how doubt is expressed without direct confrontation.

Hedging Language (模糊语)

At C2 level, you should express doubt with sophistication:

  • 据报道 (reportedly): distances the speaker from the claim
的可能性 (cannot rule out the possibility that...): epistemic modality
  • 有待核实 (remains to be verified): signals caution

Structures of Doubt

(although...nevertheless...): concedes some validity while maintaining critique
(even if...one cannot...): epistemic condition
X" (the so-called "X"): scare quotes, questioning the label

Key Concepts

  • 信息茧房 (echo chamber): you consume only information that reinforces existing beliefs
  • 带节奏 (steering rhythm): a term for manipulating emotional public discourse
  • 认知战 (cognitive warfare): state-level information manipulation

In Chinese discourse, direct accusation is often replaced by strategic ambiguity. Learning to read between lines — and to write between them — is a core C2 skill.

Zwroty

Reportedly, this information remains to be verified
Cannot rule out the possibility of deliberate misinformation
The so-called fact-checking (sceptical tone)
A narrative that generalises from the partial
Emotional narrative obscures the facts
Break out of the echo chamber
Stay rational, don't be steered by spin
Read information critically

Typowe błędy

Simply labelling something 假新闻 (fake news) is itself a post-truth rhetorical move. Analytical writing requires evidence-based qualification.

让人变蠢了 is emotionally charged and vague. Academic discussion requires precise causal mechanism language.

Blanket distrust is as epistemically weak as blind trust. The C2 move is to describe critical evaluation methodology.

带节奏了 is correct colloquially, but in analysis it needs to be unpacked as narrative influence on cognitive framing.

Monocausal explanation (因为网络) is reductive. Academic analysis requires multi-factor framing.
