Using Chengyu Precisely
Chengyu (成语) are four-character idioms with classical origins. At C1, using them well signals mastery — but misusing them signals the opposite.
Three critical rules:
1. Do not interpret literally (望文生义).
- 空穴来风 literally means "wind through a hole" — it implies a rumour has some basis, NOT that something is groundless. Many learners use it backwards.
2. Know the connotation (褒/贬/中性).
- 力排众议 (to overcome all opposition) is positive — use it for brave leaders.
- 一意孤行 (to act alone despite opposition) is negative — use it for stubborn, wrongheaded behaviour.
3. Match the context (语境).
- 美轮美奂 describes architecture or decor — using it for a person or an idea is wrong.
- 相濡以沫 is for couples supporting each other in hardship — using it for friends is an overstretch.
Exam tip: For each chengyu you learn, memorise: its classical story (典故), its connotation (褒/贬/中性), and 1-2 correct usage examples.

这件事空穴来风，完全没有根据。这件事并非空穴来风，背后可能确有隐情。空穴来风 means a rumour has some basis — using it to mean groundless is the classic error of 望文生义
