Hedging in Academic Chinese (模糊表达)
In academic writing, hedging (模糊表达) is not weakness — it is precision. Overstating claims is a serious academic error.
Why hedge?
- Research rarely proves things absolutely
- Hedging signals that you understand the limits of your evidence
- Overconfident claims invite stronger criticism
Common hedging patterns
- 在一定程度上 — to a certain extent
- 该研究在一定程度上支持了这一假设。
- 初步表明/显示 — preliminary evidence indicates
- 调查数据初步表明，该现象与经济因素相关。
- 不排除...的可能性 — does not rule out the possibility that...
- 目前的数据不排除其他影响因素的可能性。
- 有待进一步研究/证实 — requires further research/confirmation
- 这一结论有待未来的实验进一步证实。
Degree adverbs in academic contexts
Careful use of adverbs signals precision:
- 较为 (comparatively) → 较为显著 (comparatively significant)
- 相对 (relatively) → 相对稳定 (relatively stable)
- 显著 (notably) → more confident than 较为
- 明显 (clearly/obviously) → the most confident level
