Pets and Measure Words
One of the most important features of Chinese grammar is measure words (量词, liàngcí). Every noun requires a specific measure word when counted.
Common animal measure words
- 只 (zhī) — cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, small animals
- 条 (tiáo) — fish, snakes (long flexible creatures)
- 头 (tóu) — cows, horses, pigs (large livestock)
- 匹 (pǐ) — horses (specific)
Pattern: Number + Measure Word + Noun
- 一只猫 (yī zhī māo) → one cat
- 两只狗 (liǎng zhī gǒu) → two dogs
- 三条鱼 (sān tiáo yú) → three fish
有没有 (yǒu méi yǒu) — affirmative-negative questions
- 你有没有宠物？ (Nǐ yǒu méi yǒu chǒngwù?) → Do you have a pet?
- Equivalent to 你有宠物吗？ but sounds more spoken
💬 Example: "我有一只猫，它很可爱。" (Wǒ yǒu yī zhī māo, tā hěn kě'ài.) → "I have a cat, it's very cute."

- 我养了一只狗Saying you have/raise a dog
- 它叫什么名字？Asking a pet s name
- 它很可爱！Saying something is very cute
- 我喜欢猫Saying you like cats
- 我不喜欢蛇Saying you do not like snakes
Typowe błędy
一个猫一只猫Use 只 not 个 as measure word for animals
两条狗两只狗条 is for fish and snakes, 只 is for dogs
我有猫一只我有一只猫The order is number + measure word + noun
它是很可爱它很可爱Do not use 是 before adjectives, just 很 + adjective
我不有宠物我没有宠物Negate 有 with 没 not 不, always 没有
