Finding Your Voice in Russian
At C2, you move beyond correct Russian to distinctive Russian — developing an авторский стиль that is unmistakably yours.
What is Linguistic Voice?
Your linguistic voice is defined by:
- Лексический выбор — which words you choose from the many synonyms available
- Синтаксический рисунок — your preferred sentence structures
- Тональность — formal, ironic, intimate, detached?
- Ритм — the musicality of your prose
Russian Stylistic Figures
Master these to colour your writing:
- Анафора — repetition at the start of clauses: Я помню это утро. Я помню этот свет. Я помню тишину.
- Градация — escalating series: Он устал, измотался, был опустошён полностью.
- Оксюморон — contradiction: живой труп, горячий лёд, громкое молчание
- Риторический вопрос — Разве это справедливо? (not expecting an answer)
Irony and Sarcasm
Russian irony is often subtle — understatement (литота) rather than exaggeration:
- Ну да, конечно... — Yeah, right... (ironic)
- Блестящая идея — A brilliant idea (when clearly it is not)
- Не без оснований — Not without reason (understatement for emphasis)
Register Awareness
A master writer switches register consciously:
- Высокий стиль → для торжественных текстов
- Нейтральный стиль → для деловых и научных текстов
- Сниженный стиль → для разговорной речи и художественной прозы
Expressions
- выработать собственный стильTo develop one's own style
