Polish developed from Proto-Slavic through several stages. The oldest Polish text, *Bulla Gnieźnieńska* (1136), shows early forms. *Jezyk staropolski* (10th-15th c.) had features lost today: dual number, aorist and imperfect tenses, and different vowel length distinctions (*iloczas*). *Sredniopolski* (16th-18th c.) was the golden age of Polish literature. Latin, German, French and Italian borrowings enriched vocabulary. The 19th century saw *puryzm jezykowy* movements trying to replace foreign words. Modern Polish standardization occurred mainly in the 20th century.
