Concise Writing in Japanese

At C1, mastering concise writing techniques is essential for professional and academic Japanese.

名詞化 (meishika) is nominalization: turning verbs into nouns to create denser, more formal sentences. Use こと or の, or sino-Japanese noun forms.

問題を解決する → 問題の解決

*Solving the problem → The resolution of the problem*

体言止め (taigendome) ends a sentence with a noun instead of a verb, creating a punchy, literary effect common in journalism and poetry.

東京の夜景。美しい光の海。

*Tokyo's night view. A beautiful sea of lights.*

Both techniques condense information. 名詞化 removes unnecessary verb endings to make writing denser, while 体言止め creates dramatic emphasis. When editing for conciseness, look for 冗長な (verbose) passages and ask: can this verb become a noun? Can the predicate be omitted? Combine with 端的に (briefly) and 要点 (key point) to streamline your writing.

Expressions

  • 問題の解決を図るAim for problem resolution
  • 春の訪れ。新たな始まり。The arrival of spring. A new beginning.
  • 端的に述べるState briefly

  • 冗長な表現を避けるAvoid verbose expressions
