Answering the phone

In Italian, phone calls start with specific expressions:

• Pronto? : Hello? — Standard phone greeting (only used on the phone!)
• Chi parla? : Who is speaking? — Asking who is calling
• Sono Marco. : It's Marco. — Identifying yourself
• Parlo con...? : Am I speaking with...? — Checking you reached the right person

Making polite requests

Potrebbe (could you — formal) and Può (can you) + infinitive are used for polite phone requests:

• Potrebbe parlare più lentamente? → Could you speak more slowly?
• Può ripetere, per favore? → Can you repeat that, please?
• Potrebbe lasciare un messaggio? → Could you leave a message?
• Potrebbe richiamare più tardi? → Could you call back later?
• Può passarmi il signor Rossi? → Can you put me through to Mr. Rossi?

Common phone phrases

• Un momento, per favore. → One moment, please.
• La linea è occupata. → The line is busy.
• Richiami più tardi. → Call back later.
• Posso parlare con...? → Can I speak with...?
• Glielo/Gliela passo. → I'll put him/her through.
• Ha il numero sbagliato. → You have the wrong number.
• Non sento bene. → I can't hear well.
• La linea cade. → The line is dropping.

Leaving a voicemail

• Buongiorno, sono Maria Bianchi. → Hello, this is Maria Bianchi.
• Chiamo per... → I'm calling about...
• Potrebbe richiamarmi al numero... → Could you call me back at number...
• Grazie, arrivederci. → Thank you, goodbye.

💬 Esempio: "Pronto? Posso parlare con la signora Rossi?" → "Hello? Can I speak with Mrs. Rossi?"

💬 Esempio: "Potrebbe parlare più lentamente, per favore?" → "Could you speak more slowly, please?"

💬 Esempio: "Un momento, gliela passo." → "One moment, I'll put her through."
