Grammatical Gender (der/die/das)
Every German noun has a gender. You must memorize it with each new word:
- der (masculine): der Hund, der Vogel, der Fisch
- die (feminine): die Katze, die Maus
- das (neuter): das Tier, das Kaninchen, das Haustier
There are no reliable rules — learn the article with every noun!
Indefinite Articles (ein, eine)
- ein — a (with masculine/neuter: ein Hund, ein Tier)
- eine — a (with feminine: eine Katze)
- kein/keine — no/not a (kein Hund, keine Katze)
Ich habe einen Hund. — I have a dog. (Akkusativ)
Ich habe keine Katze. — I don't have a cat.
Note: In the accusative case (after haben), ein becomes einen for masculine nouns.
