Traditional Dutch poetry favors the jambe (iamb) — an unstressed-stressed pattern that mirrors the natural rhythm of Dutch speech. The sonnet flourished during the Golden Age, with P.C. Hooft and Joost van den Vondel writing masterful fourteen-line poems in Dutch alexandrines.

Modern Dutch poetry broke with fixed forms. The Vijftigers (Fifties movement) — led by Lucebert, Gerrit Kouwenaar, and Hans Andreus — embraced vrij vers (free verse), surreal imagery, and anti-establishment language. Their revolution parallels the Beat poets in English.

Key poetic devices in Dutch include beeldspraak (figurative language), enjambement (running a sentence across line breaks), and klanknabootsing (onomatopoeia). Dutch compound words create unique opportunities for poetic compression — a single compound can carry an entire image.
