Translation and Adaptation
At C2 level, understanding the art of translation reveals the deepest structures of language. Japanese poses unique challenges due to its cultural specificity and structural distance from European languages.
Wasei-Eigo: False Friends
和製英語 (Japanese-made English) creates words that look English but have different meanings:
- マンション — apartment building (not mansion)
- サラリーマン — office worker (not used in English)
- テンション — energy/excitement (not tension)
Translation Strategies
- 直訳 (literal): preserves form but may lose meaning
- 意訳 (free): preserves meaning but changes form
- 文化的等価: finding the closest cultural parallel
The Untranslatable Gap
Some Japanese concepts defy direct translation:
- Keigo levels have no equivalent in most languages
- Sentence-final particles (ね, よ, な) carry nuance no translation captures
- The omission of subjects in Japanese creates ambiguity that must be resolved in translation
