Logical Connectors for Structured Writing
Writing a well-structured essay in Japanese requires mastering formal logical connectors that guide the reader through your argument. These connectors are more formal than their conversational counterparts.
したがって means "therefore" or "consequently": 人口が減少している。したがって、労働力の確保が課題となる (The population is declining. Therefore, securing the workforce becomes a challenge). It introduces a direct logical consequence.
それゆえ means "for that reason" or "hence": 証拠が不十分である。それゆえ、結論を出すのは時期尚早だ (The evidence is insufficient. Hence, it is premature to draw conclusions). More literary than したがって.
その結果 means "as a result": 技術が発展した。その結果、生活が便利になった (Technology developed. As a result, life became more convenient). It highlights a cause-effect relationship.
以上のことから means "from the above" or "based on the foregoing": 以上のことから、教育改革が必要であると結論づける (Based on the foregoing, we conclude that educational reform is necessary). This is typically used in the conclusion section.
These connectors create the logical flow expected in academic Japanese writing.
